Really nice recording of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Orchestra by the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Eugene Ormandy.
There are real cannons.
This version is a bit slower than I’m used to, but there are people singing in this version, so there’s a trade off there. And you can’t go past the cannons :) Current theory: Tchaikovsky had a friend listen to it and they loved it so much they jokingly said ‘the only way you could improve it is with canons’.
And Tchaikovsky was all ‘CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!’
Sorry, I get heaps excited about Tchaikovsky and the 1812 overture. I love it too much. It introduced me to classical music. Enough cannot be said.
